The Steelers
are 9-0 you allowed the fewest points of any grade 1-2 team (12 for the entire season) and scored almost 350 points! (almost 100 more than any other team!) Due to some IT
glitches I have been unable to update the team page for several weeks.

47 - bengals 0 The Steelers are 4-0 We had a great practice in the rain yesterday. As the rain came down harder, our STEELERS team played better and better against a very good grade 3-4 team. Many thanks for showing up and playing hard. Those are the days you will remember most as you grow up and look back on your "younger days". I know I do! See you all tomorrow night at 5:00PM as we try and extract some revenge on the Green Bay Packers team and avenge the Super Bowl debacle in the "real" NFL. Steelers

But as we say after every game,
everything this team accomplishes we accomplish "Together".
Every single player contributed to the success we saw on the field
on Friday Night against the Bengals. We started off on defense and
right away Josh and Troy and Luke were shutting down the Bengals
offense not letting a single play gain more than three yards. It was now Gavin's chance to get a touch on the ball. He made great use of it as he took the reverse 45 yards for yet another TD. He flat out just had more speed than anyone on the Bengals. On the extra point, Troy had been doing a great job all week on some new pass plays. But in the game, he froze up and under threw the pass. The Bengals went three and out and we were back on offense. Jake got play #3 and again outpaced the Bengals for yet another score running 45 yards up the right side. I love Troy but he once again forgot what he was doing and threw the ball to the wrong player with a pass that came up short. Bengals go three and out again as everyone did a great job on defense. Great rush by Luke, great coverage by the corners, excellent containment from Jesse and Jonah up front. On the next set of downs Troy, Jesse and Jonah all got carries. Turnover to the Bengals but once again our defense did a great job shutting them down. Luke freaked them out repeatedly with a great rush. At the start of the second half we started out with runs by Jesse, Josh and Parker. Parker got tackled by not one but five of the Bengal players but our Ref roger decided that this was a blowout and let it go. That's football sometimes...Set on avenging the tackle, Parker lined up at left corner and intercepted the next pass play the Bengals threw for a touchdown. The extra point pass from Parker was to Luke but slightly to his left and went incomplete. The Bengals went three and out again and we took over on downs. Jesse lined up in the four hole and took the hand off. He went about seven yards up the left side on a good carry. On the next play we sent Jesse up the right side on Fly3000 but the route was slightly over run and pass came up short. I wanted to keep getting our junior players the ball but we needed a first down (15 yards). I let Parker have his third carry of the game and while we were shooting for a first down he was able to take it for a TD. Not what I had in mind, but we'll take it. On the extra point we went for one point (which we almost never do) and threw a slant route to Josh from Parker. The pass was low but Josh managed to dig it off his knee and score the extra point! (Great job Josh) Again the Bengals take over after the Steelers score. Jesse locks down the right side of the defense and does a great job not allowing anyone to get past the line of scrimmage on his side. Jonah asked to move to corner so we moved Parker up to left linebacker. Troy had a great rush, Parker put on solid left side containment and the panicked quarterback threw the ball into Josh's sector where he made a great catch and returned the ball for a TOUCHDOWN! Great job Josh! I think that is the first 1st grader Pick six we have had! The extra point was to be thrown to Jesse. He was instructed to "Run to the 'G' (The Goal Line Marker) take two more steps and turn around". Well, he followed instructions and did run to the 'G' and turned around. The problem was I failed to tell him which G to run to and he ran right out the back of our end zone, through the next field's end zone, went passed the second "G" and turned around. To his credit, Jake almost got the ball there! (30 yards) Jesse, we'll run over field markers this week in practice. You were in a position you had never played and you did a great job all game! Parents- I hope you are all so proud of the way this team is playing the very complicated game of football. They have all come so far in a very short amount of time and everyone is advancing their game on an individual basis and as a team. Congratulations to you all. See you at practice. Please study your playbooks. Steelers
28 - Bears 0
The solid defense resulted in a turnover on downs and Jake and Gavin went back to work on another Fly3000. The result was an immediate touchdown. We missed the extra point by just two yards when Gavin made an excellent run on play 4. More defense and another turnover on dows got us about 1/2 way through the second quarter. That's when the trouble began. As much as I love him, my youngest son Troy started to have some major problems hanging onto the ball. He later reported that it was slippery but video review showed that he was not forming a box and was reaching for the handoffs Parker was trying to give him. When he went back to quarterback he was not staying in contact with the center. These actions all resulted in fumbles and some tears. How could this happen? He's been solid all year. Add to that he was getting cranky and we had the recipe for disaster. Then it occurred to me...He is in kindergarten. He is only 6. He woke up early Friday morning and it was now well after his normal bedtime (After 8PM). He fell asleep on the way home from the game (We live three minutes away). Dad needed to cut him more slack. The second half rolled around and things started to fall back into place for us. A couple of good runs and a great defensive effort kept the Bears to three and out on every series in the third quarter. Jesse McClintock had three good carries for 10 yards. Jonah had two carries for 10 yards. Then it was time to get the ball into the hands of a player with good moves and some speed...Josh Lee. On his first carry he went 45 yards and scored his first touchdown of the season (See video above). Josh also pulled flags and plugged up the middle denying the Bears any opportunities in the center of the field. For his 45 yard touchdown run and the flag pulls, Josh was awarded the coveted MVP medal! Way to go Josh! Last week's MVP (Luke) started the game like he finished last weeks with all kinds of flag pulls and great rushes! Gavin Dykema scored points on both sides of the ball with two great catches (One TD and One 2pt conversion and a Safety!). Gavin had four flags in a great effort. Jake Hardesty was on fire all over the field as well. Flag pulls and a fantastic touchdown on play #3 forced the defensive corner to play tight allowing the receivers to get open. Jesse McClintock did a great job on containment. He went to pull a flag in the second quarter and the player's flag belt tail gave Jesse a friction burn. He found a way to take that pain and turn it into power and on the next play he shut them down and had a great flag pull. Jesse has come a very long way since he started playing football last Fall. He is running for positive yards on every carry and doesn't miss flags! Last but certainly not least is Jonah. He had some awesome flag pulls and a great run up the left side. He was also fantastic at quarterback. He and Jesse have been really working well together to get the ball started quickly and without many dropped snaps. That's not as easy as it sounds and they have done a great job! Next week's game is at 6:40PM and is against the Bengals. Please study your playbooks folks. We are going to run DRAGSTER and QUICK HITTER with our newer players. We are also going to run P6 and P5 if we are in a no run zone so study up folks. See you on Wednesday. We have practice at 4 and a scrimmage at 5. Wear black and shorts with no pockets in them. THEY MUST HAVE THEIR MOUTH PIECES TO PRACTICE.

Our kindergartener and first graders carried the ball 11 times this week. Everyone had positive yardage and Jonah scored his first touchdown of the season running 24 yards and making some GREAT moves. We had far fewer plays on offense this week as our defense kept intercepting passes for touchdowns in the second half. The second graders also played very well. They carried the ball a total of six times and ran the ball very successfully. We used one of our new plays this week and that resulted in a touchdown the very first time we ran it. Last week's MVP Gavin Dykema took the DRAGSTER hand off from Jonah and went 45 yards for a touchdown. Josh also played very well this week and racked up his first points of the season. Josh ran a perfect route and scored two points on PAT pass from 12 yards out when Parker Michaelsen threw him the ball on a run option play. Jake Hardesty had a typically tenacious game with lots of flags and a fantastic run for a touchdown up the right side of the field. I think this was the fastest I have ever seen Jake run! So here is where we are after week #2: We have scored exactly 100 points on offense. We have not allowed a first down. The whole team is rapidly improving and that is important because we face a very good Chicago Bears team this coming Friday. The Steelers are currently ranked #1 in our division and #1 overall for grade 1-2 in Friday Night Lights. Please keep working on your passing and catching and running and we'll see you at practice this week.

44 - Texans 0
Jake Hardesty then carried the ball on play #3 for 23 yards up the right side on a great scramble. That was followed by Gavin Dykema scoring on play #4 which found no one home on the left side of the field.
In the second half, Josh has his first run as a Steeler and scampers 15 yards up the right side on a great carry! Gavin Dykema followed up that run with yet another play 4 reverse for the TD. Jonah Ripoll was already doing a flawless job at quarterback but it was time for him to rack up some yards and on his carry and he did! 15 yards up the left side on play #1. He would have gotten more yards but was pushed out of bounds (not legal) by the defense. Jesse got the call on play #3 but the Texans rushed early (Was not called) and frustrated him a bit. Josh then got the ball again on play #1 and again the Texans rushed early and again there was not call by the ref. This was the ref’s first game and he made some errors but we had the game in hand and I did not want to push the issue. Jake took the ball on play #3 and got the first down with a fast 23 yard run.
Jesse then got the ball again and made great use of his speed up the field. He scored a touchdown but the ref called it back saying he was out of bounds. Film evidence disputes that but there is no playback film review in FNL. That being said, it was his best run in FNL and I know he felt great about it!
On defense Luke did a great job rushing, everyone stayed “home” in their zones and we did a very good job shutting them down!
Gavin Dykema was our MVP for a number of reasons not the least of which was a “PICK 6” (Interception) that he ran back for a touchdown. He stayed in his zone and got a number of blocked passes as well as flags. He ran for two TDs and caught a two point pass in the back of the end zone. GREAT JOB GAVIN ON BEING THE MVP!
WELCOME Welcome parents to another great year of Friday Night Lights flag football. Our emphasis this season will be focused on teaching the little guys the game of flag football through the use of various drills mixed in with a pre season scrimmages. While there will be some running during the practice, our main goal will be to make sure everyone has fun and EVERYONE carries the ball. The same will be true in games.
We need volunteers. Each family will be expected to support the team
with one or more volunteer positions. If you are unable to participate
with your time we ask that you help host the year end party through a
contribution.
Team Meeting
Friday, January 28th, 2011 at Lee Elementary on Foster Rd in
Rossmoor. 4:15PM on the Picnic tables. Please bring your player. Community
Friday Night Lights has enjoyed remarkable growth in just three years.
The fun and light atmosphere combined with great food vendors (A new one
each week) make for a true community experience. Competition on the
field is combined with the all important “What’s for snack?” which at
this age is what they really remember at the end of the day. Practice
Practices will be held at Oak Middle School on Wednesday from
4:00-5:00PM with our official scrimmages beginning promptly at 5:00PM
and running until between 5:45PM and 6:00PM. FNL has eliminated an extra
day for scrimmages this season so we will need to squeeze it all into a
single day. We only get one practice a week as a team so being on time
and ready to play is key to their individual development. Please be
certain that your player arrives five minutes early and has a cold
water/ Gatorade or similar and has already gone to the bathroom and has
their cleats on and tied tightly. A properly fitting mouthpiece is a
must on the practice and game field at all times. I suggest you start
the season with 3-5 of them as they do occasionally go missing! Clinics/ Outside training
There is a clinic this Saturday at Lee Elementary at 10 AM. You can walk
up and register.
Games will be held at Oak Middle
School
on the field nearest the outdoor basketball courts. Start times are
currently scheduled to either be 5:30PM, 6:30PM or 7:30PM. Please arrive
at least thirty minutes before game time. If you will not be at a game
or you are running late, please call my cell

Please bookmark it now. Volunteers
FNL is a
100% volunteer based operation. The team's success is very much
dependant on your support and involvement with the players and the
practices and games. It actually takes a lot of effort to prepare the
players each week and we can never have too much support. We welcome
OLDER siblings to come and help with practices. Each family needs o take
at least one volunteer position. They are available on a first come
first serve basis. The chart on the team web site will provide a list of
what is available. Please email or call me and let me know which
position you are volunteering for. email:

phone 562 301 8334. Some simple rules
Everyone wants to carry the ball. Everyone would like to score. In order
to participate in a meaningful way your player will need to know their
plays. Those who demonstrate their knowledge of the plays will be given
the opportunity to score touchdowns. Players who come to practices on
time with a good attitude and try hard will be given the opportunity to
score more often. I believe in rewarding those who show up on time ready
to work and pay attention for the duration of each team activity.
If your child suffers from a medical condition of any kind, please make
sure I am made fully aware of the condition immediately. I have a son
with severe ADD so I know the challenges a short attention span can
create and I will work with you and your child to make the FNL
experience a positive one regardless of any condition they may suffer
from. In the event that your player becomes sick or injured during the
season, please let me know as soon as possible. If your player has a bad
day at school please make me aware of that as well. If there are issues
at home that you feel comfortable sharing with me then it will often go
a long way toward helping your player cope with the rigors of our
somewhat demanding practices. I may go easier on a player who may be
experiencing trouble off the field so communicating with me will often
times help them in their quest to making his parents proud of each
week's game performance.
School comes first.
Period. The player will be made aware of this on the first day of
practice. In the event that your player is not performing to your
expectations in the classroom I can be highly motivational and may be
able to help them pull their grades up. Just let me know if there is a
problem with academics and I will work with you to help solve the
problem.
Sportsmanship.
I do not tolerate foul language of any kind. I will not allow smack
talking or taunting of the other teams, parents or coaches at any time
regardless of whether the referee hears it or not. We will do our best
to be competitive and we should win some of our games and we will likely
lose some of the games during the nine game season. I would like to win
more than we lose but I am more interested in improving your athlete as
a player and a person than putting up numbers on the scoreboard. Personal responsibility. The players will be notified that the gear they need for football is their responsibility. Their shorts, shirts, game jerseys, socks, mouthpieces and cleats are all to be kept in a single place, preferably in a bag or backpack. If the gear needs to be washed then the athlete is responsible for either washing the gear with parental supervision or request that the parents get the gear clean well ahead of practice or game day. Please help them keep the gear together but if the player comes to practice or a game missing a piece of gear then it is his responsibility to explain why they are missing the gear and then take whatever steps are necessary to replace that gear immediately.
Last but not least, we are a family for the duration of the season. I
fully expect the players to take care of one another on and off the
field. There will be no complaining about another athlete's performance
and I expect them to look out for one another during the games and also
at school. About the coach I have been coaching youth sports for better than 10 years now and this will be my 9th season of flag football at the age 5-6-7 range. We will emphasize learning the rules of the game as well as offensive and defensive fundamentals. My goal is to make your player better throughout the season not just on the field but also in their day to day life by learning how to be competitive and gaining respect for coaches, players and the referee. I think you will be amazed at what they are capable of by the end of the season.
